Academic Advising Initiatives

How has your department/unit benefited from using Navigate?
Our unit uses Navigate on a daily basis. The Navigate platform is our go-to resource for learning more about the students we serve in transitional advising. We may only meet with a student once, so Navigate is where we can easily see their course history, alerts that may help us refer them on, and reports about their advising experiences to date so we can best serve their needs.

What feature in Navigate do you utilize the most?
I definitely use the advising reports the most. In transitional advising, we may work with a student from any given major on any given day, and our job is to help those students explore their major options, demystify the path to a potential different major, and guide them toward people or opportunities that could help them find their fit. Advising reports are a vital piece of that puzzle because, when written well, they give us a starting point and often enough context to keep our advising student-centered.

What would you tell other advisors who are thinking of using Navigate?
I would tell other advisors that Navigate is a very useful resource for serving your students and for providing just-in-time advising. It is also a great way to connect and inform the various campus resources that our students may need to utilize to reach their highest potential. Give it a try. I think it will make your (advising) life easier.
