What was the biggest challenge you encountered as a transfer college student and how did you overcome it? The biggest challenge I experienced was simply getting acclimated to a large university. I was born and raised in a small, southeastern Virginia town and had previously attended two community colleges. Initially, I was anxious (and hesitant) to attend an institution the size of Virginia Tech. However, it took little time to get to know people and become involved in extra-curricular clubs and activities. Additionally, my academic advisor was very welcoming and reassured me whenever I began doubting myself. It was one of the best decisions I ever made to attend Virginia Tech!
What is one piece of advice you would give transfer college students? First, I would suggest contacting the academic advisor of the desired program the student is interested in prior to applying. Personally, I did this to ensure I was taking transferrable courses that would benefit my intended program of study. Academic advisors welcome the opportunity to work with potential students and their academic success is a priority. Lastly, I would recommend to get involved in major-related and extra-curricular activities. Don't be afraid to ask questions and to never doubt yourself!
