What do you enjoy about your role in advising?
Having the ability to guide and empower student-athletes through their academic journey is so fulfilling to me- there is nothing like seeing that "light bulb" go off for a student when they finally understand something, or learn what career they truly want to pursue!
In what ways have you contributed to advising in your department/area?
In the SAASS department, I provide overall organization and academic support on a daily basis for men's basketball and women's lacrosse student-athletes (weekly meetings, scheduling tutors and mentors, etc.)- while collaborating with colleagues to provide the best overall academic experience for all Virginia Tech student-athletes.
What advice would you give to other professionals who want to a make a difference in the life of their students?
Be as open-minded, as understanding and as empowering as possible- without letting it empty your cup! This can be a challenging profession, but very worthwhile.
