What do you enjoy about your role in advising?
I love being able to connect 1:1 with students and get to know their stories, goals, and aspirations. My favorite part is being able to see students' eyes light up when they realize they can make their plans work. I enjoy putting together the puzzle pieces to help students reach the end goal of graduating. I am so grateful that students trust me to be along with them on their collegiate journey.
In what ways have you contributed to advising in your department/area?
I teach PSYC 1024 for incoming first year PSYC majors and provide resources and support for academic planning. I helped launch and co-supervise our Psychology Ambassador program. I serve on committees such as Retreat Planning and Advisor Appreciation Day Committees. I am committed to professional development and attend conferences and webinars and will bring back knowledge that I have gained.
What advice would you give to other professionals who want to make a difference in the life of their students?
Treat each student as an individual and be yourself! I have found my most authentic relationships with students happen when I really listen to their story and learn about them. Additionally, I try to make myself and my space welcoming, and never make students feel as though I am all-knowing, or any better than them. Maintaining that our relationship is two-ways (we both learn from each other), has helped me make a difference and be a better advisor.
