Kadence Butte

Major: Criminology

  • Where did you transfer from? Penn State
  • What is one piece of advice you would give to a potential transfer student? Never give up. As someone who was rejected from Virginia Tech my senior year of high school, and ended up going somewhere else my first-year of college, I never gave up on my dream of coming to VT. Because of this I worked hard to get to where I am and now, I am graduating a year early due to the support I have gotten from this community.
  • Do you have any campus involvements and/or achievements you want to highlight? Relay For Life at VT was the first club I joined, and it made me feel like I was a part of something bigger. It is my favorite way to give back to the community and help spread awareness with people who feels the same way. I also joined the Senior Class Gift Committee this year and I love seeing seniors giving back to areas of Virginia Tech that have made them feel like home these last 4 years.

  • Where did you transfer from? Virginia Western Community College
  • What do you enjoy most about VT or your major? I love how close knit the people in my major have become since I transferred! It was like I made community right off the bat and Blacksburg become home so quickly. Since I was a transfer student, I was a little anxious and nervous that I might be an outlier since many of my peers had previous classes together. After the first day of class, this feeling was overcame with joy, acceptance, and many new friendships blooming.
  • What is one piece of advice you would give to a potential transfer student? A piece of advice I would share is get ahead of things as much as you can and stay super organized! I went to a community college a year prior to entering Virginia Tech and came in with an associates degree. I had lots of classes, grades, and three different transcripts I had to submit to VT. Luckily, I had kept everything organized so I knew how and where to access the information I needed to transfer in order to wave many of my classes. Staying organized and ahead of the game pays off when registering for classes, transferring necessary information, and relieves lots of stress in the end.
  • What do you hope to be doing in ten years? In ten years, I hope to either be an elementary teacher with a few years of experience or a school counselor or psychologist. I hope to have a husband a have started a family of my own.
  • Do you have any campus involvements and/or achievements you want to highlight? Not yet - I hope to get involved in the Spring with KDP, BCM and other fun clubs on campus! I am trying to get adjusted this semester with my workload so I can get involved more in the Spring.
