The college environment requires that students learn to be autonomous, flexible, and critical in their thinking, yet we know that many of our advisees need support in how to develop these important skills. By implementing a coaching mindset, advisors can encourage students to set their own academic goals, develop strategies to meet them and reflect on their academic performance. This session will introduce academic coaching into the framework of developmental advising, review the concept of a coach approach to advising, and share strategies to empower self-reliance and foster life-long learners.

The Market of Virginia Tech is a food access program for Hokies experiencing food insecurity. The Market of VT functions as a “free grocery store,” providing produce, proteins, and pantry staples to participants on a weekly basis. This session will provide information about this new program and offer ways that academic advisors can refer students experiencing food insecurity to appropriate campus and community resources.
