Which National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Core Value resonates with you the most in your position as an advisor and why?

Empowerment is central to my advising practice. I empower students by helping them identify their strengths, articulate their goals, and take ownership of their academic and professional journeys. For example, I guide students in creating personalized academic plans that align with their career interests, and I support them in navigating challenges by fostering problem-solving and self-advocacy skills. I also encourage students to explore leadership opportunities, internships, and research experiences that build confidence and professional identity. Through intentional conversations, equitable guidance, and a focus on long-term development, I aim to help students grow into thoughtful, ethical professionals who are prepared to contribute meaningfully to their communities and fields.

What advice would you give to other professionals who want to make a difference in the lives of their students?

One of the most powerful ways educators can make a lasting difference is by showing students that their voices matter. When we truly listen when we ask about their goals, honor their lived experiences, and respond with care—we create a space where learning becomes personal and empowering.
