Heather Hollandsworth

College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences

What do you enjoy about your role in advising?

I enjoy the opportunity to witness and support students’ resilience and growth as they navigate academic and personal challenges. The most rewarding aspect is seeing students develop the skills and confidence to persist through obstacles. I am fulfilled when I get to build trust and rapport with students. Ultimately, what I enjoy most is the ability to make a meaningful impact on students’ lives by helping them navigate their challenges and achieve their goals.

In what ways have you contributed to advising in your department/area?

I currently serve on the First-Year Experience (FYE) Council and am leading an FYE Connections group this fall. I am also part of the First-Generation Faculty Working Group, where we focus on strengthening support for first-generation students. In addition, I serve as the Professional Development Chair for the Virginia Tech Advising Network, am a Clifton Strengths Consultant, and enjoy helping students and colleagues leverage their strengths in meaningful ways.  Together, these roles allow me to bring fresh perspectives, resources, and connections back to my work with Sociology students in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, strengthening the support and opportunities we can offer them.

What advice would you give to other professionals who want to make a difference in the life of their students?

Ask questions, seek PD opportunities, and advocate for students. We should continually improve our practice to enhance the student experience. We need to learn from colleagues and embrace opportunities. We must stay updated on trends and best practices. Our student access is a privilege and should be leveraged for their benefit to promote policies that prioritize their well-being and success. Our advocacy can lead to systemic changes that benefit students.
