Years as an academic advisor:

Why did you choose to be an academic advisor?
The advising role was taken from all faculty in my department 2 years ago. I miss it. I enjoyed helping students set and reach for their professional goals. I enjoyed seeing them mature and explore. Many get in touch with me still when they reach crossroads or need a reference. I value these long-term relationships.
What is one of your favorite parts of your role as an advisor?
I have been able to help a number of students who have had special concerns to work around. There was a group of athletes I tried to talk out of leaving early but promised to help when they were ready to complete their degrees - and I did. I've helped students whose family situations or status as an international student affected their studies. I'm glad I've had the opportunity to help students overcome obstacles and still graduate on time or at least, ultimately graduate.
