Which National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Core Value resonates with you the most in your position as an advisor and why?

It’s difficult to choose just one core value above all others, as each plays a vital role in effective advising. However, I believe integrity is foundational—without it, professionalism and ethical behavior cannot exist. I hold myself to a high standard of preparation for every student meeting to ensure I provide thoughtful, accurate, and personalized guidance. I’m transparent about my academic experiences, sharing lessons I’ve learned so students can gain insight and, ideally, surpass my path. I demonstrate respect by offering honest assessments of each student’s academic standing and goals. In doing so, I aim to foster an environment where students feel empowered to take ownership of their academic journey by making informed, intentional decisions.

 What advice would you give to other professionals who want to make a difference in the lives of their students?

Continual growth is essential in advising. Without evolving—toward efficiency, clarity, and empathy—it’s harder to impact students meaningfully. Growth includes expanding knowledge, learning campus resources, engaging in self-reflection, and participating in professional development. When we grow as advisors and humans, we create a safe space for mutual learning and collaboration with our students.
