Which National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Core Value resonates with you the most in your position as an advisor and why?
As a first-generation transfer student, I understand how overwhelming it can feel to navigate higher education without guidance. That experience drives my “why” as an advisor: to equip students with the tools, resources, and confidence to take ownership of their journey. Empowerment aligns with my advising philosophy of connection, communication, and teachable moments. I strive to truly know my students, anticipate their needs, and provide them with options so they can make informed decisions. By fostering empowerment, I aim to help students build resilience, self-efficacy, and the skills they need to succeed both academically and personally.
What advice would you give to other professionals who want to make a difference in the lives of their students?
Be proactive and intentional. Anticipate students’ needs, communicate clearly, and provide resources before they know they need them. Empowering students to make their own informed choices helps them grow into confident, independent learners.
