Which National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Core Value resonates with you the most in your position as an advisor and why?

For me, the most important one is "caring." Nearly everything else about being an advisor follows from that. Because I care about my advisees, I am committed to improving myself so that I can better support them. Because I care about the development of both my graduate and undergraduate advisees, I point out opportunities to them so that they are empowered to pursue those that best support their personal, educational, and professional goals. When they are successful, I celebrate with them; when things don’t go according to plan, I help them pick up the pieces and come up with a new plan. Because I care, I respect them as individuals and value the manner in which their individual experiences provide them with unique perspectives, needs, and goals. Because I care about students and the reputation of the university, I strive to set examples of ethical and professional behavior for all who interact with me.

What advice would you give to other professionals who want to make a difference in the lives of their students?

I think it is important to get to know students as individuals to help them identify opportunities that are best for them while helping prepare them for challenges along the way. In order to effectively do that, it is necessary to stay up-to-date on resources that are available—continuous education is critical.
