Which National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Core Value resonates with you the most in your position as an advisor and why?

As an academic advisor in the School of Animal Sciences, I am deeply aligned with the Core Value of Empowerment. I support students in developing the skills, confidence, and autonomy needed to make informed decisions about their academic and professional paths in diverse fields such as veterinary medicine, research, agriculture, and conservation. My advising approach centers on guiding students through complex curricula, identifying meaningful experiential learning opportunities, and fostering reflective practices that encourage personal and academic growth. I strive to create a supportive and inclusive environment where students feel heard, respected, and encouraged to take ownership of their educational journey. Empowerment also involves helping students navigate challenges, including competitive admissions and ethical considerations in animal care, with resilience and adaptability.

 What advice would you give to other professionals who want to make a difference in the lives of their students?

Empowerment in advising means helping students become confident, informed, and independent decision-makers. In the School of Animal Sciences, this involves guiding students through a diverse and evolving academic landscape while encouraging ownership of their educational journey. Especially, I use these tools: lead with empathy and respect, be consistently present and approachable, provide a model integrity and professionalism, reiterate to stay curious and keep learning.
