Advisee Roles and Responsibilities

The student shares the responsibility for developing an advising partnership with their advisor. Over time, the partnership results in increased responsibility for the student as they learn how to navigate their academic journey. Students should:

Communicate goals, needs, wants, and concerns to the advisor in a respectful and sincere manner:

  • Know where to find assigned advisor and their contact information
  • Share information with advisor which aids in learning about resources and opportunities to support intended goals, needs, wants, and concerns

Keep abreast of their own academic progress and requirements related to their academic program:

  • Be familiar with how to run a Degree Audit Report (DARS) and what requirements are needed for graduation
  • Review DARS prior to your advising appointment to aid in asking questions
  • Review unofficial transcript on a regular basis to ensure it is accurate

Make, keep, and be prepared for appointments with advisor:

  • Schedule appointments in a timely manner when requested for topics such as discussing academic standing and course registration
  • Be respectful of advisor’s time and attend the meeting or cancel in advance so another student can utilize that appointment time

Inform the advisor of changes in plans and/or circumstances that might impact academic performance:

  • This may include informing advisor about situations which are impacting your attendance in class such as, but not limited to, long term illness, familial obligations, etc.

Know departmental procedures for changing advisors:

  • If this is applicable to your college and/or department

Bring advising concerns to the attention of the advisor:

  • Bringing concerns about information shared or experience to advisor in a constructive manner
